Vesak 2025 Grand Celebration: Spreading the Noble Values of Buddhism

Translated by Uyen Linh| 09/05/2025 04:58

As summer returns and lotuses bloom under the full moon of the fourth lunar month, Buddhists around the world joyfully celebrate the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama. In Bình Thuận and across Vietnam, temples, monasteries, and lay households are adorned to welcome the Vesak 2025 celebration—a sacred time to honor the Buddha's message of compassion, wisdom, and peace.

A Spiritual and Cultural Festival Filled with Meaning
Vesak, also known as Buddha's Birthday, is one of Buddhism's most significant spiritual and cultural events. It is a time for followers to reflect on the teachings of the Buddha and commit to living by his message of inner peace, compassion, and ethical living. It is also a time to engage in meaningful acts that bring joy and relief to others, promoting harmony and embodying the Vietnamese tradition of unity and mutual support.
Venerable Thích Nguyên Nguyệt, Deputy Head of the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Bình Thuận Province, shared: “This year’s Vesak celebration coincides with several important national milestones: the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification, the 135th birth anniversary of President Hồ Chí Minh, and the 80th anniversary of National Day on September 2. Of special significance, Vietnam is also hosting the United Nations Day of Vesak in Ho Chi Minh City, under the theme ‘Solidarity and Tolerance for Human Dignity: Buddhist Wisdom for World Peace and Sustainable Development.’ This global cultural event underscores the humanistic and peaceful values that Buddhism brings to the world.”

Ceremonies and Events Enrich the Vesak Spirit
To mark the occasion, the Bình Thuận Buddhist Sangha is holding a weeklong celebration with various ceremonial and cultural activities. Highlights include the Baby Buddha procession and the symbolic launching of seven lotus flowers onto the Cà Ty River in Phan Thiết City from May 8–15 (lunar calendar: 8–15/4), creating a captivating spiritual scene for locals and visitors alike.

The traditional Buddha bathing ceremony is also being conducted in a serene and respectful atmosphere, offering participants a moment of reflection and spiritual calm. A special musical and cultural night celebrating Vesak will be held at Nguyễn Tất Thành Square on the evening of May 10 (13/4 lunar calendar). The main Vesak ceremony will take place on May 11 at 5:30 PM at the same venue, followed by a colorful floral vehicle parade through Phan Thiết’s main streets.
Across Bình Thuận Province, local Buddhist councils, temples, monasteries, and other places of worship are also holding solemn and meaningful Vesak observances in accordance with official guidelines.

Promoting Unity and Social Engagement
Beyond its religious rituals, Vesak also serves as a platform for spreading Buddhist values through community engagement and charity. In alignment with the national unity bloc, the Buddhist Sangha upholds its guiding principle: “Dharma – Nation – Socialism.” Monks, nuns, and lay followers are encouraged to actively participate in national causes, environmental protection, climate action, and social development.

This year, numerous charitable activities have been organized during Vesak in Bình Thuận, including building homes for the poor, distributing thousands of gift packages, and hosting “zero-cost markets” for disadvantaged residents. These efforts reflect Buddhism’s commitment to compassion, helping the needy rise above hardship and improve their quality of life.

Mr. Nguyễn Văn Trí, Standing Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee in Bình Thuận Province, noted: “In recent years, the provincial Buddhist Sangha has demonstrated unity and close ties with the community, taking an active role in social welfare, humanitarian work, and cultural and economic development. These contributions have played a crucial part in strengthening the great national solidarity and building a more prosperous, civilized Bình Thuận.”
